While Ali’i Drive, the bustling oceanfront street, is lined with eateries, many can trend towards the touristy crowd, so we’ve put this guide together to help you navigate to the options we think stand above the rest.

Always topping our list is the incredible Sushi Sam’s, the best sushi on the island hands down (really, one of the best restaurants period) and just steps away from PACIFIC 19 Kona. Sam, a former chef at the famous Kukio Golf and Beach Club, decided to start his inaugural restaurant in 2021. With only a handful of tables plus sushi bar seating, it’s an intimate eating experience, so reserve ahead of time. However, sometimes you’ll be able to grab an available bar seat if you arrive at opening.

Krua Thai Cuisine stands out for its exceptionally good Thai food. This modest, off-the-beaten-path gem allows diners to bring their own beer, adding a casual touch to the dining experience.

In the heart of Kona’s Brew Block, just a short distance from Pacific 19 Hotel, sits Willie’s Hot Chicken. This lively eatery is celebrated for its no-frills, reliable service and, most importantly, its excellent fare (and don’t worry, they have mild flavors too if tongue-blazing heat isn’t your thing). Also in the Brew Block is Kona Brewing Co. Established in 1994, it has since been a pioneer in crafting unique, island-inspired beers. The on-site pub, known for its laid-back indoor-outdoor vibe is accented by handcrafted pizzas and local fare (we normally stick with the pizza). And, they’ve got a wide array of quirky t-shirts to go home with.

For lunch, we often visit Poi Dog Deli. It brings together smoky southwestern flavors, Louisiana’s spicy Cajun, and Hawaii’s sweet freshness, that combine to make a menu of great sandwiches, wraps, and salads filled with fresh ingredients. This is definitely a local’s favorite. Finally, another “go-to” for us is Izakaya Shiono Kona. More laid back and much more available for your casual lunch or dinner drop in, they serve a diverse selection of Japanese food, sushi, homemade ramen noodles, and lots of sake choices.
